Warburtons, Britain’s largest bakery brand, and Morrisons have launched a new initiative called “Ask for Ellen” to support families during the long summer break as schools close. Anyone, including adults and children, can visit any Morrisons Cafe and ask Ellen to receive two toasted crumpets with butter and jam for free, with no questions. This initiative will be available all day in any of Morrisons’ 398 cafes across the UK from July 17 to August 13 while stocks last.
According to a recent survey by The Warburtons Foundation, 64% of parents of school-aged children expressed concern about the increased costs of childcare and family activities during the six-week summer holidays. The school holidays are expected to cost parents almost £200 extra. Morrisons Cafe, in partnership with Warburtons, is offering this free service to support families during this period.
The initiative is named after Warburtons’ founder, Ellen Warburton. Chris Strong, Morrisons Cafe Buying Manager, stated that supporting customers during the school holidays is vital for Morrisons, as many families worry about providing additional meals usually covered during the school term.
Jonathan Warburton, Chairman of Warburtons, said that the company is pleased to offer support to families through the holidays, given the ongoing cost-of-living crisis that pressures household budgets. He added that helping families across the country is as essential to them today as it was to Ellen Warburton when she started the company in 1876.
The Ask for Ellen initiative follows the success of the “Ask for Henry” scheme, which saw Morrison’s partner with Heinz to give away a free jacket potato and beans in its cafes. During this period, Morrisons will also continue its Kids Eat Free promotion, which enables families to get a free kids meal when purchasing an adult meal costing £4.49 or more.
